It is widely recognised that the world’s supply of recoverable petroleum-based fuels (crude oil and gas) have probably peaked several years ago and are now in decline. This must affect all countries including New Zealand and combined with increasingly unacceptable  electricity-generating sources ( e.g. coal and nuclear) and concern about their effects along with those of transportation on climate change, this has meant that governments are making plans for alternative and sustainable future energy sources for their country.

In August 2011, the New Zealand Ministry for Economic Development released its ‘Energy Strategy 2011 – 2021’  ( ref.  http://www.mbie.govt.nz/info-services/sectors-industries/energy/energy-strategies/?searchterm=energy%20strategy Accessed Sept. 23 15). See also the files attached to this Blackboard folder and other relevant files that can be downloaded from this MBIE site) in which it outlines future policy for this 10 year period.  The emphasis in this document is on the development of petroleum and mineral fuels sources with little consideration of  alternative and sustainable future energy sources such as geothermal, wind, tidal and solar (thermal and photovoltaic) energy generation.

Case Study 2 : Write a report  ( <4000 words  + figures/tables + reference list) in which you choose one form of sustainable energy and discuss its potential for contributing  to New Zealand’s future energy requirements.

In writing this report, you should cast yourself in the imaginary role of a technical expert whose task is to brief non-experts on the technical aspects of this issue. So you should  translate technical issues into plain language, summarizing and explaining the important technical aspects.

Specifically in your report, you should provide a brief description of the technology involved in generating energy in the manner you have chosen, and then consider :

  1. The present status of this type of energy in New Zealand.,
  2. The potential for further development of this type of energy source in New Zealand.
  3. How this type of energy would reduce New Zealand’s dependence on petroleum and other non-renewable fuels.
  4. How this type of technology could reduce New Zealand’s present ‘carbon footprint’ and hence its impact on global climate change.
  5. The existing (or potential) environmental impact of this type of energy source in New Zealand . How could this impact be managed ?
  6. How would this energy source fit in with the policies stated in the ‘New Zealand Strategy 2011-2021’.

Where ever possible, use overseas examples of this type of energy source to support your comments on the New Zealand situation.
